Israel Journey #3A – Tel Aviv, Here We Come

Shalom! Israel Journey #3A recently finished celebrating our second Shabbat in Israel, this time in Tel Aviv! We’ve had a hot and busy few days moving across the country and we’re definitely all ready for some rest and relaxation!

On day 10, we stopped at Atlit Detention Camp and Zichron Yaakov to learn about the history and significance of each place. We had some free time in Haifa for lunch where participants ate everything from stuffed grape leaves and fresh fruit to shawarma and sandwiches. After lunch we stopped by the beautiful Baha’i Gardens and had an opportunity to learn more about the Baha’i Faith. We eventually made our way over to the beach to prepare for surf class!

Everyone had a lot of fun learning to surf and hanging out by the water. We were able to enjoy a BBQ at the beach and stick around to view a magnificent sunset before heading back for the night!

On the morning of day 11, we headed down to Tel Aviv and had an exciting opportunity to volunteer at the Jaffa Institute packing food boxes for families in need. We learned a bit about Tel Aviv and had some free time to explore the flea market in Jaffa before regrouping for a filling lunch at Dr. Shakshuka.

After lunch our group traveled to the Rabin Visitor Center to learn more about the story of the former prime minister Yitzhak Rabin. Finally, we ended the day with a delicious and insightful dinner at Bakinjera, an Ethiopian Jewish restaurant in Tel Aviv. There were stories, dances, and lots of new flavors of food to enjoy!

We rounded out the week on day 12 with a bit more Tel Aviv exploration. In the morning we had a chance to learn some Israeli martial arts on the beautiful beaches of Tel Aviv before getting some free time to hang out in the water. We then traveled to the Peres Center for Peace and Innovation which was an immersive and intriguing experience that was enjoyable for all of the teens.

For lunch, we had a couple hours to explore the Carmel Market and Nahalot Binyamin street festival. We concluded our adventures for the day with an interesting graffiti tour before heading back to our hotel to rest. We joined back together for a lovely outdoor Shabbat song session. The teens reflected on their experience so far and shared what they are looking forward to for the rest of the trip. We can’t wait to see what comes next!
