Spain Discovery: Shabbat in Madrid

What a few days it’s been!

We left Barcelona on Friday morning to catch a train to Madrid. After settling into our seats, we battled each other in an intense card game, got a few extra hours of needed sleep, and debated the latest episode of The Bachelorette. We then made our way to Toledo, while stopping for a panoramic view of the city. We received our roommates and prepared for our first Shabbat together. We played a Shabbat-themed game which helped us get to know each other better. We walked through the old streets of Toledo to get to our no-phones Shabbat dinner. We returned to the hotel as the sunset over the city.

Lucky for us, Saturday was a late wake-up. We had a choice of Shabbat programming; meditation in the park with Phil or discussion on Jewish identity with Robyn. We then had a walking tour of the city which included the Alcazar, the Jewish quarter, and one of the oldest synagogues in Europe. Out of breath from the hills and winding roads, we enjoyed a group dinner featuring salmon – we love protein on this trip! We concluded Shabbat with a memorable Havdalah service, led by the brave volunteers!

On Sunday, we got an early start and left for Madrid. We explored the city on a drive through the main plazas, followed by our choice of lunch (which really meant churros!). Feeling like royals, we toured the Palace to see the artwork and extravagance of the 18th century. We tour the Real Madrid “football” stadium, which included many photo opportunities, leading to the ultimate photo competition (congrats to our winners, Sophie and Maddy!). And finally, for those who did not think tapas were enough, we enjoyed an all-you-can-eat buffet before returning back to Toledo. And off to Seville tomorrow!!
