Spain Discovery: Bull Fighting & Game of Thrones

After a rigorous few days, on Monday we left the north of Spain for Andelucia – what our tour guide jokingly referred to as the “frying pan” of Spain. On this 5+ hour journey, we all appreciated the opportunity to catch up on some sleep, play some bus games, and enjoy the scenery as we drove across these new landscapes. About an hour after leaving Toledo, we stopped to tour the Spanish windmills near Consuegra. These Dutch windmills were reconstructed in Spain, inspired by the famous Spanish novel Don Quixote.

We continued our long drive towards the south of Spain, where we finally reached Sevilla. In Sevilla we stopped to visit the primary bull fighting ring in Sevilla (Plaza de toros de la Real Maestranza). There we learned about the history and culture of bull fighting in Spain, toured their museum, and ultimately got to enter the ring ourselves.

After this long day of travel we headed back to the hotel to call it a night. The next day (Tuesday) was perhaps our busiest day so far. Our morning started with a Guadaluxe river cruise. We then moved on to a guided tour of the Seville Cathedral. Originally constructed as a mosque, the building was converted to a Cathedral following the rise of Catholicism in Spain. Our tour included a climb of La Giralda Sevilla, a tall tower that was built to be climbed by donkeys, such that it has no stairs and has a series of 35 ramps that leads to the top of the tower.

We then had some free-time in the markets of Sevilla, and continued from there to visit the Royal Alcazar of Seville and the Plaza de España. The Royal Alcazar of Seville was particularly cool for our Game of Thrones fans – for those who watch the show, many scenes from the country of Dorne were filmed at the Alcazar. Here, and in many other areas of Seville, we were constantly amazed by the Muslim architectural influence that makes Seville absolutely unique. Tomorrow, we leave Seville behind, continuing on our journey towards Cordoba.
