Israel Journey #2A: Farming, Surfing, & Helping Others

Wednesday, July 3rd

Yesterday we began our morning by volunteering at a Niretzion Place, one of the oldest agriculture farms in Israel. Everyone spent time working together to weed olive trees in order to allow their best harvest. Next, we enjoyed a delicious traditional Israeli lunch outside with a scenic view. Afterwards, we headed to a beach in Haifa to swim in the Mediterranean Sea before our surfing lessons! Everyone had so much fun, some of us wiped out more than others! We celebrated our surfing success with another classic Israeli meal, falafel, hummus and pita, on the beach.

Thursday, July 4th

Today we left the Kibbutz Ortal Guest House in Galilee right after breakfast to head to the ancient port city of Jaffa for a shakshuka lunch! We got free time to explore the Jaffa flea market where we all got to buy some awesome souvenirs. Our final stop for the day was Save a Child’s Heart, an Israeli-hard international humanitarian center, based at Woodson Medical Center. The charity has provided life saving heart treatments to 5000 children from all over the world with their medical teams volunteers. We all had the chance to spend a couple hours playing with some of the children at the center. We played games with them, talked with them, and learned a lot from their experience. There may not have been fireworks this Fourth of July, but today certainly was a day full of celebrations and fun times. -Madison Karlin
