Italy Discovery #1 B – Update #4

Our first stop in Florence was the Piazzale Michelangelo where we saw sweeping views of the city. Besides being the perfect photo-op, this was a great way to start our day of touring.

We were greeted with warmth at the Great Synagogue. We learned about the history of the beautiful and important building, filled with colorful designs and stained glass, and rich with history. We then made our way through the city to the Gallery of the Academy where we saw Michelangelo’s famous statue of David, among other amazing pieces of art. Climbing the Campanile de Giotto required a lot of effort and energy in the hot Florence sun, but it was worth climbing over 400 steps for the view from the top! We returned to our hotel for dinner and free time.

Wednesday was a big travel day as we made our way to Rome, but we had two awesome stops along the way. We stopped first at the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Many of us climbed the tower and felt a little off balance, but made it to the top! We had a contest to see who could take the best picture with the tower, and Sarah B’s Pisa picture took the cake! Our second stop was to our gladiator training, where we learned some of the basic skills required to fight as a gladiator before taking our talents into the ring. We celebrated the champions and had mercy on most of those who were defeated, and each of us received our official gladiator certificate at the end! We went out for a delicious dinner in Rome in the evening. We look forward to touring Rome over the next few days. Stay tuned for updates from Roma!
