Italy Discovery 2A: Update #2

Dear Family and Friends,

On Friday we travelled by boat from Venice to the islands of Murano and Burano. On the hour ride over we all danced and listened to music and had a wonderful time. Burano was stunning and the various colors of the houses were so amazing to see! In Murano we got to see a professional glass-blower and his beautiful work. That night we got dressed up and walked to the Jewish quarter to attend Shabbat services. The congregation was very kind and the experience in the synagogue was one-of-a-kind. At the end of the night we all went to sleep happily ready for the next day to come.

On Saturday morning, we walked to a park for Shabbat programming, where we participated in bonding activities, Torah games, and a discussion about anti-Semitism. We walked to the Jewish ghetto to have Shabbat lunch and listened to the Rabbi give a d’var Torah. We then walked to Piazza San Marco (St. Mark’s Square) where we went into the big church and then walked around the Duke’s palace. We went back to the Jewish ghetto to have our Havdallah service later that night, but we were invited to join the Chabad service instead. It was a great way to end Shabbat, and we couldn’t have asked for a better end to our time in Venice!

Today, we left Venice and traveled to Slovenia via train and bus. We spent a lot of the day traveling, but the hours on the bus were worth it to get to Slovenia. It is such a beautiful country with exquisite mountains and a bright blue river that flows through the valley. My favourite part of the day was white water rafting – going down the rapids was so much fun! We got to jump into the river, too! Even though it was cold, I had a great time. So far Slovenia has been amazing and I’m excited to experience more of it tomorrow…

More to come!
