Italy Discovery 1: Update #2

Italy 1
Update #2

Hello friends and family of Italy Discovery #1!

Friday morning began with a tour of the Jewish Ghetto, the first Ghetto in the world. We all enjoyed sleeping in (only an hour though!) and learning a bit of Italian history. We set sail for the beautiful island of Murano, where we visited a traditional glassblowing factory! The teens loved watching the demonstration and buying souvenirs for friends and family. In the late afternoon, our group traveled to Lado, Italy to spend a few hours at the beach, swimming in the Adriatic Sea, laying in the sun, and playing games. We enjoyed a wonderful pizur lunch around the small town.

We then returned to the main island of Venice to prepare for Shabbat, spent at the Spanish synagogue in the Jewish ghetto. We experienced a typical European Orthodox Shabbat service and dinner at a Kosher restaurant overlooking the canals of Venice. Our first Shabbat began with a program designed to discuss and debate our Jewish values. An adapted service was also led by Adam, one of our participants! The rest of the day was spent walking through the crowded streets of Venice and taking in all the sites. After a nice buffet dinner, we ended Shabbat with a lovely havdalah ceremony, where we brought together old and new traditions.

Sunday morning we woke up excited to leave Italy for a couple days to spend some time in Slovenia. After an afternoon of white water rafting on the Soca river, we settled into our hotel for the evening.

We are excited for our next busy days ahead. Until next time… !
