Israel Journey 3A: Update #4

Dear Friends and Families,

On Tuesday we woke up on Kibbutz Ketura and spent the morning learning about the ways in which a kibbutz works. We then finished up our time on Kibbutz Ketura with lunch and pool time!

We then went to the Arava Institute where we learned how Israelis have made the desert bloom. We explored their indoor agricultural playground – the kids loved it!! We then drove into the Judaean desert where we stopped at Kfar Hanokdim. There, we rode camels and enjoyed a Bedouin feast. We spent the night under the stars in a tent.

An early morning wake up began our day. We drove through the desert to Masada where we climbed up in time to enjoy the sun rise! Then we spent some time exploring the ancient ruins. We hiked down the mountain and enjoyed a delicious breakfast.

We then traveled to Ein Gedi where we enjoyed a short hike to a beautiful waterfall. We were able to get in the water and cool off! After, we went to the Dead Sea where we floated and enjoyed a nice lunch!

Then, it was back to Jerusalem where we enjoyed a delicious dinner and heard an interesting talk on religious pluralism in Israel.

On Thursday we began our day at the Knesset where we learned about Israel’s democracy. We then went to a home for the elderly- we supported their work at their to gift shop, and gained insight into their everyday lives.

We were then off to Ben Yehuda Street where we shopped and wandered the streets of Central Jerusalem. We ended our afternnon at Yad Vashem- the world Holocaust Remembrance Center. It was an emotional and educational afternoon. After a somber afternoon, we drove to BBYO B’yachad- a giant party bringing together all of the BBYO Passport groups in Israel. It was an amazing night, celebrating with so many teens!

Today we began our day at Mount Herzl  where we learned about the sacrifices Israelis make to defend their country. We enjoyed lunch at the Machne Yehuda Shuk while taking in the pre-Shabbat atmosphere in Jersualem. After that, we came back to the hotel for an afternoon of relaxation and preparation for Shabbat.

We brought in our final Shabbat together with a song session, a delicious dinner and plenty of fun games.

Shabbat Shalom!

Your staff,
Sunny, Melanie, Aniko and Ariel
