Trek West #3: Our Final Days in San Francisco

It is wild to think that we have already reached our final leg of our incredible adventure through the west of the United States! We have seen and experienced so much together! As our trip is coming to a close, the two of us feel so lucky to have had such enthusiastic travel buddies throughout these last few weeks.

Our time at Lake Tahoe was a definite highlight of the trip. We begun our day on Wednesday with stand up paddle boarding and kayaking on the lake. We then drove to Squaw Valley, the site where the 1960 Olympics was held, for lunch. There, we took the gondola up to the top of the resort, where we rollerbladed, played corn hole, and sunbathed amidst the picturesque mountains. We had a quick dinner on our way back to our hotel and were able to catch the sunset at a nearby beach.

Friday, we embarked towards San Fransisco, stopping in Fairfield for lunch and touring the Jelly Belly jelly bean factory on our way. We then made our way to UC Berkley, where we will stay for the remainder of the trip. After dinner, we explored Pier 39 in Fisherman’s Wharf, a waterfront tourist attraction. Some of the group opted to visit the dock famous for seal sightings, while a few of the braver souls taste tested hot sauce at one of the stores on the main drag. As counselors, we were slightly weary of this activity but luckily those who partook managed to survive.

Throughout the trip, we have made a tradition of acknowledging one or two of your children each day as “Mensch of the Day”. The Mensch of the Day is someone that we found particularly positive or cooperative throughout our travels, demonstrated sincere friendship and encouragement among their peers, among other types of exceptional behavior. Each Mensch had the opportunity to tell their life story (most managed to do so in under a minute – very impressive) and be interviewed by their peers on all topics, which have ranged from their favorite sports team to their favorite dried fruit. Throughout the trip, each of your kids have been acknowledged as Mensch of the Day. This has been a fun way for us to show our appreciation for your hilarious and kind hearted children and get to know them in a new way. We must admit – your kids are quite the unique bunch and sure do have a lot to say!

We had a jammed packed last few days on Trek West. As we entered into our final Shabbat together, we had the time to rest and reflect on the last three amazing weeks!
