Trek West #2: Hoover Dam, Blue Man Group, and Santa Monica Pier

Our second day in Las Vegas started with a trip to the Hoover Dam in the morning. We went on the power plant tour and learned about how the plant generates electricity and the construction of the dam. Afterwards, we saw the breathtaking view from the top of the dam across Boulder Canyon.

Afterwards, we went to the strip to walk around and go shopping for a few hours. That evening, we went to see the Blue Man Group. It was a great show, lots of fun, and some of us left in blue paint or with other show favors! The next day we headed to Los Angeles. Upon arrival, we went to the Museum of Tolerance. At the museum, we learned about human rights issues and the Holocaust.

In the evening, we enjoyed a sunset walk along the beach at Santa Monica Pier, and of course, more shopping! Thursday morning, we volunteered at the HIV/AIDS food bank where the campers bagged and distributed food and other goods. That afternoon, we enjoyed a lovely California special lunch, In and Out Burger!!

We then volunteered at a local retirement home. The campers did arts and crafts with memory-impaired residents, bingo, and learned some dance moves from a spunky resident. Dinner was at a Kosher Chinese restaurant, and we followed that up with an evening at a comedy show. The next day, we went to Newport Beach! It was a great way to usher in Shabbat relaxing in the California sunshine.

During Shabbat, we relaxed at American Jewish University where we caught up on sleep and laundry. We then headed to Yosemite, for a few days of hiking and environmental education.
